NYC Construction Insurance: Controlling Job Site Security
By now, most Americans, especially NYC residents, have heard about the case of 16-year-old Justin Casquejo scaling the top of the Freedom Tower. He spent two hours at the top of the building, and led many to question the lax job site security.
How exactly did Casquejo attempt this feat? Authorities say he was dressed like a construction worker when he squeezed through a hole in a fence at about 4 a.m. and simply took an elevator to the top of the spire. He was charged with criminal trespass and later had a BASE jumping charge added as well, both misdemeanors.
Although the liability falls on the shoulders of the Casquejo family in this case, officials should be questioning the NYC Construction Insurance implications of something like this occurring. What if Casquejo had been injured? Or what if he had vandalized property at the site?
Controlling job site security is a vital component of NYC Construction Insurance. In addition to having insurance coverage, construction site managers should take steps to strengthen the security on their job. They can do this by installing a security fence, at least eight feet in height, enclosing the entire area. You can also install lighting for after daylight hours to construction worker injury and to also deter vandals. Job site managers may also consider improving security by securing tools and equipment in locked storage sheds, to prevent theft, vandalism, or injury.
