There is nothing quite like getting out on the open roads. It’s been a favorite vacation for many people ever since owning cars and there’s no better time to do it than the sunny, warm springtime. However, depending on the type of car you own, your road trip preparations might be a little different from the next driver.
Classic cars are elegant and can make road trip adventure dreams come true. However, they’re also more likely to develop problems than newer cars, and may not be equipped to handle long distances. Are you properly protected with New Jersey Classic Car Insurance? It is a risk to make out the old beauty on a road trip, but worth it when you have peace of mind. Before planning out a long trip, make sure you know how to handle it.
Get a Mechanic’s Approval
Even if a classic car is in mint condition, it may not be ready for hundreds or thousands of miles. Take the car to a mechanic who knows your vehicle and discuss the trip you want to take. They may advice to get ahead of any problems by replacing parts.
Ask for recommendations of other garages along your route. Remember that classic cars require specialized care and many regular garages won’t be equipped to work on them. You don’t want to trust your vehicle’s repairs to just any shop.
Speak with your New Jersey classic car insurance agent, as they can provide a list of approved, accountable mechanics. Learn how to fix some of the smaller problems your car and take care of minor maintenance such as oil changes.
Take a Short Trip
Your classic car might not be up to a cross-country tour of U.S. national parks, but not all road trips need to be weeks or months in lengths. Consider taking your car to the beach, or to some of the nearby towns and cities. Depending on where you’re located, there are countless cute small towns, big cities, beaches, museums, lakes, and other nice destinations that won’t require a detailed plan. A short day trip or a nice little weekend trip will give you a change of scenery without exhausting your classic car. Do some research and see what’s around!
Be Equipped with Adequate Protection
You can never be 100% certain that your classic car can handle a road trip. Have you looked at the insurance policy for your classic car lately? Make sure it will cover any damages that may happen on the trip you’re taking. Many classic car policies have driving limits of a certain number of kilometers since, more often than not, classic car owners choose not to drive very far in these vehicles. Are you headed to a far foreign territory? Double check to make sure your policy will cover your vehicle and you. It may actually require that you notify your insurer in advance. Your New Jersey classic car insurer will also be able to guide you on issues relating to international driver’s insurance. Also, note that classic cars need special handling and cannot be picked up by just any tow truck. Remember to find out all you can about the road conditions and weather of areas you’ll be driving through!
