How to Prepare Your Classic Car for a Road Trip

How to Prepare Your Classic Car for a Road TripAs we head into summer, it’s the perfect time to start planning a road trip. Whether you have a specific destination in mind or you’re just looking to enjoy the scenery, a road trip can be an amazing summer activity. But before you start thinking about the fun you’re going to have on your trip, you need to make sure that your car is prepared, and if you drive a classic car, you’re going to have to do a little bit more work.

No one wants to worry about the reliability of their car while on the road. Properly preparing your classic car for road trips can prevent mishaps and make the experience so much better. Classic cars are compiled of decade-old technology. If the car isn’t restored, you’re missing today’s restoration techniques and hardware, and you could run into some trouble.

There is a little uncertainty mixed in with the excitement of owning anything classic, which is why New Jersey Classic Car Insurance is so important. You never know what’s going to happen on the road, so you want to make sure your investment is protected.

Tune-Up

Don’t underestimate what a simple tune-up can do. It is a great way to start preparing your car for what it will endure. Here are a few things to take care of right off the bat:

  • Change the oil and filter.
  • Check the spark, and keep in mind that any suspicious carbon or oil deposits on the plugs means a serious problem must be catered to before the road trip.
  • Look for clogged air filters and problems with the fuel system.

Worn Rubber

Notice the status of the gaskets, seals and belts. Any wearing or cracks will require replacement. This quick step will prevent having to replace a broken belt on the side of the road.

Tires

Keep tires at the correct air pressure to minimize wear. If a car has been in storage for a while, check the tires for flat spots. Replace worn or cracked tires. Don’t forget to check the air pressure of the spare tire. There’s no point in having a backup if your backup isn’t ready to be used.

Brakes

Make sure the fluid level in the master cylinder is at the correct level. Check under the car and each wheel for leaking brake fluid. New classic or vintage car owners may not know when brake pads or lines were changed last.

Cooling Systems

Keeping your car’s engine running cool is crucial. Hot days will quickly test a car’s cooling system. You may want to flush the cooling system, replacing it with fresh fluid. Also, check the radiator fins for debris and make sure the radiator cap fits tight.

Road Test

Take your car out for a long road test, driving both city streets and highway roads to get the car in as many road conditions as possible prior to your trip. This will allow you to see how the car operates in every circumstance and what may go wrong so you can make adjustments prior to your trip. If you know that your trip will take you over certain types of terrain, take a trip out on that type of terrain to ensure that your car will be able to handle it.

Plan a Route

The road you take makes a big difference, and we don’t just mean the scenery.

A route with many hills and unfavorable weather is difficult for a classic car. Elevation changes and modern day traffic on interstate highways are also not great to introduce a vintage car to.

Give yourself some leeway when heading for your next destination. There’s nothing wrong with taking your time and enjoying the drive, especially in a classic.
