New Jersey Commercial Property Insurance: Safety Tips for Realtors
New Jersey commercial and residential realtors meet with a lot of different clients at various properties. Their busy schedule means they are constantly traveling to new terrain and properties and constantly meeting people for the first time.
Due to the transient nature of the job, realtors are also exposed to numerous safety concerns- some scams and crimes target open houses or agents specifically. It is always a good idea to be prepared. Here are some tips from the National Association of Realtors on how to stay safe on the job.
- Always tell someone from the office or a friend where you are going. Make sure if you are hosting an open house, a co-worker has the address of the house you are at.
- Don’t put your home phone number on your business card- always use a mobile or office number.
- Always meet new clients at the office. Not only will this give you a chance to sit down and meet with them personally, but first impressions are always great indicators.
- Take your own car for showings and lock it when you leave.
- Always follow behind when giving tours. Never lead your client through the house. Always let them enter and leave the room first. It ensures you aren’t ever caught off guard and is respectful to the client, as it allows them to focus on the room.
- Find out as much as you can about prospects, including where they work, and what they do. Not only will asking detailed questions help you get a better idea of what they are looking for, but it is a good precaution to protect your own safety as well.
- Whenever possible, don’t host an open house alone. Take along a colleague. Never show a property alone at night or advertise it as vacant.
Are there any safety tips we’ve missed? We’d love to hear from you.
